Bancroft Elementary School

Five-Building Campus Modernization in Ward 1

Project Overview

Bancroft Elementary School, located in Ward 1 at 1755 Newton Street NW, Washington, DC, underwent a comprehensive campus-wide modernization for the DC Department of General Services (DGS) and DC Public Schools (DCPS). The project unified a previously disjointed five-building, approximately 94,000-square-foot complex into a single, cohesive, and fully accessible school campus — with select structures demolished and rebuilt, two historic buildings renovated, and all connected through new accessibility improvements including ramps and elevators. The project was designed by Ayers Saint Gross and Fielding Nair International, with Coakley & Williams Construction serving as general contractor. Construction began in November 2016 and was completed in July 2018.

Our Role & Scope of Work

CCC served as a specialty subcontractor on the Bancroft Elementary modernization, responsible for framing, sheathing, and masonry across the project. Working within a complex, multi-building campus environment, our team performed structural framing and masonry as part of an integrated effort to rebuild and renovate Bancroft's aging campus. The project was completed on a compressed 14-month schedule — nearly a year ahead of the original timeline — and was delivered on time and under budget, earning an ENR MidAtlantic Award of Merit for Renovation/Restoration.

Community Impact

The Bancroft Elementary modernization gave Ward 1 students and families a school built for the demands of a modern learning environment. By uniting five disconnected buildings into a single, accessible campus, the project replaced years of operational fragmentation with dedicated spaces for classrooms, a media center, an auditorium, an art room, and an indoor play area — along with a Parents' Center to serve families directly. Built with capacity for approximately 550 students, the modernized Bancroft campus stands as a lasting investment in the children and community of Ward 1.
